M A R B L E R U N
Marble Run is a marble run - shock. Built using a mixture of modular building blocks, 3D printed modification pieces and custom designed parts Marble Run is an attraction as well as a work of art that can be installed in gallery spaces and beyond.
Built during my MA in Computational Arts at Goldsmiths University as my Final Major Project. M A R B L E R U N was a project that had play at its core. Reacting to the sometimes hostile nature of a gallery setting and the pitfall some interactive works fall into - requiring laborious interactions from their audience. M A R B L E R U N was kept playful and simple to increase its approachability.
Using network technology I installed separate marble runs around the space, disrupting the visitor's path. I designed a marble dispensing system, triggered when a marble is detected at the end of the previous run, releasing a marble into the next. This created an element of magic, as the audience wondered how and where the marbles came from and where they went. People were able to engage by playing with the run, by simply adding a marble to the beginning or by curiously wandering the paths of the run and the space between to try and discover the secret to the magic.

Social AR
Some of the most regular work I do is for brands wanting to leverage the Augmented Reality capabilities available on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.
I enjoy these projects for multiple reasons, primarily as they often mean I work in a close knit team, collaborating to Designers, Directors, Technical Artists or Animators and Production. There is always an element of problem solving, in fact the projects feel like a sort of puzzle, as we are often juggling small file size capacity, resulting in the need for clever design, careful asset creation and crafty development. Plus 99.9% of the time there is a quick turn around, as is the nature of Social Media Marketing Campaigns.
These restrictions require a good working knowledge of the entire production process and enable the opportunity to work across discipline boundaries in the effort to deliver high quality work.
There's a definite buzz when the puzzle is solved and the project is delivered.

Coinbase Super Bowl LVI (2022)
This one was a particularly exciting one for me, not only because I got to wake up on February 13th 2022 to find a potential 50 million households in the USA had seen my work overnight, but also because I got to use my developer and creative coding skills to bring this about.
The team needed to be able to test multiple versions and iterate on these, whilst also adhering to specific animation movement. This was not going to be possible within the timeframe using other methods. I was tasked with writing a program that could accommodate the variations and iterations, animation and production of the visual.
I really enjoyed the challenge and being able to use my skills to deliver something a bit different.
The ad went on to win the Super Clio from the Clio Awards.

what-the-plot
Another project from my time on the Goldsmiths Computational Arts MA.
what-the-plot is an artist tool that I built, customised and wrote bespoke software for to output the required G-Code.
Again, researching how art galleries and the "art world" can be hostile and closed off, this project evolved through developing prototypes and evaluating the user experience and reaction.
The prototyping, iterations and evaluation of the user experience were highly significant to the final outcome of this project. It was this practical research that encouraged me to rethink my initial proposal to create a piece of art to instead refocus on an artist tool. The development stages of this project had highlighted to me that an art piece responding to this topic would only play into the problem and that actually a greater impact could be had by changing the art work audiences were exposed to for which a tool for artists could be developed.
It was scary but exhilarating to change my proposal weeks into the development process but I needed to be true to my findings.
Presented in a mock product style, with instruction booklet, and leaning into the tropes of printing technology and cover-ups, artists can drop an image of their work into the program window, have it transformed by a line effect, and then choose from 3 options to create their new imperfect work.

PROTOTYPES
I really enjoy prototyping, designing through thinking & doing, and generally playing around with a technology or concept to discover the possibilities and limitations.
Below are some highlight prototypes/tests/work-in-progress'. They may or may not have gone somewhere but I learnt from and enjoyed doing them.
